Weather and climate patterns for the third-grade stem

Problem: In selecting the theme of Weather and Climate Patterns for the third-grade STEM unit, my rationale centers on the students' natural curiosity and daily experiences with weather phenomena. Third graders are at a stage of cognitive development where they begin to engage more fully with their environment, often asking "why" and "how" about the world around them. Weather is a universally relatable topic; it affects daily life, stimulates inquiry, and generates a myriad of questions. This theme taps into their existing knowledge and experiences, making it both engaging and developmentally appropriate. The selected standards from the New York State Next Generation Science Standards and Common Core State Standards align seamlessly with this theme. Standard 3-ESS2-1 focuses on representing weather data, which directly corresponds to students' capacity to observe, record, and analyze. Additionally, 3-ESS3-1 encourages students to explore human impacts on the environment, promoting critical thinking about real-world implications of weather phenomena. Meanwhile, the math standard CCSS.Math.Content.3.MD.B.4 allows students to practice measurement by collecting and graphing weather data, further integrating STEM skills. Inquiry-based learning (IBL) will be woven throughout this unit by encouraging students to ask questions and develop their investigations into weather phenomena. Provide references.
