Wealth building through the use of land falls short of biblical standards. Biblical text clearly emphasize that all land is the sole possession of God. As ultimate creator and sustainer, God alone possesses absolute property rights. The biblical regulations concerning the Sabbatical Year, gleaning, Jubilee, and interest were attempts to keep the land available to all and to avoid great extremes of wealth and poverty. The biblical concepts of gleaning and Jubilee were not utopian dreams or abstract principles from which to derive system of ethics; rather, they provided a valid economic structure designed to ensure an equitable distribution of resources. When these concepts were fragrantly ignored, they roused the prophets to call upon the people to repent.
