In 75 words respond to discussion question from classmate. For this decision I chose to discuss is those with mental health concerns. Jails and prisons are overcrowded and not ideal for a personalized approach. Those with mental health concerns face difficulty getting their needs met while also serving out their sentence.
Two weaknesses that those with mental health face while in incarceration are lack of properly trained staff, and the use of solitary confinement ( segregation). Staff do not receive adequate training on how to effectively deal with the different mental health conditions. There are over a hundred mental health conditions and it is impossible to know how to interact with all of them. The mental health training for non medical staff within facilities is scarce because mental health does not fall under their primary job duties.
Segregation is a weakness for those with mental health because sometimes it can trigger symptoms. Being confined to a cell with minimal if not non existent communication with others can sometimes deteriorate an individuals mental state. The issue with this is that facilities do not have different policies in place for rule breakers who have mental health concerns.
Two strengths of those who suffer from mental health is specialized services and identification of mental health issues. Facilities have intake screenings in place that can identified undiagnosed mental health issues. While detained it is easier for an individual to have access to medication and mental health professionals.
When housing individuals there is some consideration as to if they can live amongst others. If general population will increase a negative reaction then they will be housed with others that are compatible mentally. Need Assignment Help?
