We are designing a camshaft for a direct acting mechanical

Assignment

We are designing a camshaft for a direct acting mechanical bucket (DAMB) valvetrain - assume a single cylinder and a single valve for this analysis.

The material is nodular cast iron. At max lift on the camshaft lobe, the valve is to open 10mm. The spring rate is 400 lb/in. The surface between the lobe and the bucket can be considered lubricated steel on steel for friction purposes.

a. What diameter must the shaft of the camshaft be to have infinite fatigue life?

b. If the diameter of the cam sprocket is 125mm, what torque is required to turn it?

c. Why did we use nodular cast iron in this application?
