Way karen horney and erik erikson revised freuds ideas

Problem:

Respond to text in personable way Karen Horney and Erik Erikson revised Freud's ideas by declaring that personality is derived mostly by environmental factors and not biological. For example, the textbook 'An Introduction to Theories of Personality' by M. H. Olsen and various authors states, "To Horney, what a person experiences socially determines whether or not he or she will have psychological problems and, if so, what type of difficulties they will be. The conflict is caused by environmental conditions, not by opposing components of the mind (id, ego, and superego), as Freud had believed" and "Erikson's entire theory can be viewed as a description of how the ego gains or loses strength as a function of developmental experiences" (Olsen et al., 2020). In Horney's day the basic sexual drives that Freud based so much of his theory on were not predominate but suppressed due to financial/economical need. Because of this, Horney found it very difficult to continue supporting Freud's idea of primitive needs being in control. Erik Erikson formed his theory based on the observations of human beings throughout their entire lives. Erikson noted that personality is very much dictated by a person's reactions to environmental factors and not solely on biological make-up. One way that Horney changed how I understand personality is by allowing me to be more open-minded to the seriousness of environmental factors on what human needs really are and how they are influenced by environment.
