Investigating Waves Mini-Lab

Purpose:

To better understand the way that waves behave and interact with each other.

Materials:

• Penny
• Opaque (solid) cup
• Water
• Metal washer or other circular object
• Pen/pencil
• Bubbles

Procedure:

To receive full credit on this assignment you must use each of the following words at least once (on the whole assignment, not each question). Words may be used more than once. Vibration, refract (or refraction), interference.

1. Watch the video HERE. Explain in a complete sentence what happened and why it happened.

2. Place a penny in the bottom of an opaque (not clear) cup and set it on a table or counter. Slowly slide the cup away from you until you can no longer see the penny. Slowly add water (WITHOUT moving the cup with the penny) until you can see the penny again. Explain in a complete sentence what is happening.

3. Place a washer/cheerio (or ANY circular object that wont dissolve quickly in water) at the bottom of a bowl. While looking from above, try to place the tip of a pen or pencil into the center of the object. Explain in a complete sentence why this is difficult.

4. Blow a few bubbles. Do some research to explain in complete sentences why you see swirls of color and dark spot right before the bubble pops.
