Consider Frederick Jackson Turner’s Frontier Thesis along with your textbook’s emphasis on “internal empire” as ways to understand the settlement and incorporation of the west into the United States. Was western settlement a form of imperialism? What about the expansion of U.S. influence beyond the shores of North America? Was U.S. foreign policy in the Gilded Age and Progressive Era imperialistic? Why or why not? Was expansion both within the borders of North America and beyond essential to the revitalization and expansion of U.S. democracy in this era?
