By the 1820s, the institution of slavery had practically ceased to exist in northern states, and many Americans, both at the time and since, concluded that slavery was therefore a southern problem. Based on your reading of Running a Thousand Miles for Freedom and the Narrative of Sojourner Truth, would you agree with that conclusion? Was slavery, and the racism and mistreatment of black people that accompanied it, something restricted to the South in the United States before the Civil War? To what extent was slavery a problem particular to the South and to what extent was it a national issue?
