Parent Teachers Organization (PTO):

Many research states the importance of school having parental involvement. The students do well, and improves teachers, school and parents relationship is one and improves morale and communication within.

We can not deny that in the elementary level parents are in and out of the school constantly. They are in helping in the office, in the classrooms or in the cafeteria. The students sees the parents in school helping and it builds a safety assurance for them.

PTA or PTO has been a very important force in the school. The two organization provides a homebase for parents to go for information from the school, how to get involve in the school, and a voice for issues and concerns.

Broughal Middle School has been going to many changes in the years. Besides having a new look outside, the school is going through a change inside as well. In the four years since the new school, there has been changes in administration five times, and over ten teachers leaving. This movement in the school has created an inconsistency in student learning and teachers working together. Creating team teachers has been impossible due to this movement of staff, and it has hurt the morale of the school. Parents and school communication has suffered dearly and the trust between the two, has deteriorated.

Broughal’s PTO has not been strong in the last five years and last year it was non existent. There is no vision statement on file for Broughal. Only agendas and some of the flyers of activities done in the past years. I did read the mission statement for Broughal Middle School. One of the statements is: “Understanding that diversity is our strength we believe all students:should celebrate their uniqueness and that of other.” With this statement alone, helped us at our meeting develop our vision. The key word is understanding. In order to be able to bring forth our parents to believe in Broughal and join our meetings, we need to help and guide our parents to understand that Broughal do welcome diversity and celebrate uniqueness as stated in their mission statement.

Broughal diversity includes 68% of Hispanic, 14% of Afro-American, 17% of Whites and less that 1% on other. The facts also states that 91 % of our students qualify for subsidized lunch (free/or reduced lunch). These facts are higher than the whole Bethlehem Area School District combined! Broughal needs the community and parents help in order to help the students reach academic success . Research states: “When parents are involved at school, the performance of all the children at school, not just their own, tends to improve. The more comprehensive and well planned the partnership between school and home, the higher the student achievement.” (Henderson, A.T., and Nancy Berla. 1995).

In an informal meeting with some parents was held to collect data. I asked everyone to write on a paper answers to an important question:

1. Why do you think is important to start a PTO at Broughal?
