Assessment Brief

The overall assessment task is to develop a knowledge transfer plan for the implementation of EBP in a clinical, health or social care practice setting. This will be achieved in two stages that will be guided by Lavis and colleagues' (2003) five considerations for the design of effective knowledge transfer strategies:

1. Message: What new knowledge should be transferred to clinicians and decision makers (other stakeholders who might support EBP initiatives or not) in order to change practice?

2. Audience: To whom should research knowledge be transferred? Who will actually use (implement) the new knowledge in practice?

3. Messenger: By whom should the knowledge be transferred?

4. Process of transfer: How should the knowledge be transferred (translated) or made accessible for the audience?

5. Evaluation: What will be the effect of the new knowledge? How will this effect be evaluated? How can the change in practice be assessed?

Coursework: Part 1

a) Identity new knowledge (an intervention or model of practice) and relevance to your specific area of practice (Message)

b) Identify who the new knowledge should be transferred to and why and provide a brief description of the specific practice context (Audience)

c) Critically appraise one article reporting primary research studies (quantitative, qualitative or survey approaches) that provides evidence supporting the new knowledge and upon which the plan will be based. This critical appraisal should focus on a discussion of selected aspects of the study design that strengthen or limit the quality of the study and the evidence (results). This appraisal should demonstrate your in-depth understanding of the specific research approach discussed and ability to justify the issues you discuss (see Whiffin & Hasselder, 2013)

d) Identify a second article (any research approach) related to the new knowledge topic and briefly comment how this study and the results support the first article and your ‘message.'

Coursework Part 2:

Evidence based practice requires the integration of relevant and valid evidence in the decision making processes of clinicians, clients and a range of decision makers in the health care system. The process of moving evidence into clinical practice and policy decisions is termed knowledge transfer (KT) or knowledge translation. Coursework Part 2 will build on the work done for coursework Part 1 and requires you to develop a detailed proposal for a knowledge transfer plan by which the evidence based ‘knowledge' you have identified can be implemented in a practice context of your choice.

This plan will include:

a) Objectives (two or three are recommended) stating what you hope to achieve in your KT plan

b) A summary description of the context, those who will use the new knowledge in practice (audience), and other decision-makers or stakeholders (e.g. administrators) who might support (or not) your EBP plan.

c) A discussion of selected barriers and facilitators you might expect would influence how the new ‘knowledge' might be accepted and used by the specific ‘audience' within the context you have identified . This discussion is based on your own experience and the profession- specific reading you have been doing

d) Determine the person(s) in your chosen context who can best communicate or facilitate transference of new knowledge (messenger). This may be you or another (with more expertise related to the ‘knowledge') that you identify to support your KT plan

e) Propose and justify selected (2-3) strategies by which the new knowledge can be communicated or taught to the ‘audience' (process of transfer)

f) Propose and justify selected (2-3) methods by which the effectiveness of the knowledge transfer plan can be evaluated. (evaluation) (2,500 words, 70% of total mark)

Advice structure gives you an idea on how you can go and what needs to be included based on the 5 points mentioned

Advice on structure and content

The purpose of coursework 1 is to demonstrate your understanding of critical appraisal. You only have 1500words (+- 10%) so you will need to be concise and to the point. The following offers some guidance on structure and content.

Introduction and Message:

Briefly explain the purpose, context and structure of your report. Identity the new knowledge (for example an intervention or model of practice) and describe the relevance of this "intervention" to your specific area of practice. Within the introduction include the key message: i.e. the message or the "idea" that needs to be put forward?

Audience:

In one or two sentences describe your intended audience

Question Development

State your question and demonstrate the use of an appropriate method such as PICO or SPIDER or SPICE. Demonstration of the use of ONE of the above and your final question is all that is required.

Critical Appraisal

Once you have decided on your "message" you will need to find an appropriate article to appraise. It is advised that you choose an article that has a clear research design.

Critically appraise one article reporting primary or secondary research studies (quantitative, qualitative or survey approaches) that provides evidence supporting the new knowledge and upon which the plan, for coursework 2, will be based. The critical appraisal should focus on a discussion of selected aspects of the study design that strengthen or limit the quality of the study and the findings (results). The appraisal should demonstrate your in-depth understanding of the specific research approach discussed and ability to justify the issues you discuss. It is advised that you use an appropriate critical appraisal tool to help with your appraisal.

Check list
• Have you briefly explained which appraisal tool you will use (PEDro or CASP tool for RCTs)?
• Have you summarised the paper, have you described the study's aim, described what they did and explained what they found? This needs to be a brief but informative overview.
• Using the critical appraisal tool have you summarised the overall quality of the paper?
• Have you focussed on three or four critical points from the paper using the appraisal tool and discussed, explained and justified these points in detail?
• Have you explained the theory behind these points?

NOTE: You will not be able to discuss all of the appraisal points so you will need to be selective.

At this point identify a second article (any research approach) related to the new knowledge topic and briefly comment on how (and if) this study, and its results support the first article and your ‘message.' If the article you appraised was a systematic review, you need to select a second article not included in the review.

Conclusion:

Conclude by stating the "clinical bottom line". This is a statement which summarises the evidence and findings, and supports or refutes your "message".
