KINESICS: the study of body motion or body behavior.
In this assignment, you will venture out into a public space (i.e. a coffee shop, park, and mall) and observe the people around you. Tune out what they are saying and then sit back and watch. Take notes on what type of gestures (emblems, regulators, illustrators, adaptors, and affect displays) they are using. Part 1: Notes
Submit the notes you took while observing the people at the public space you chose. They ?an be handwritten or t??ed and do not need to be neat.
Part 2: Photos

Part 3: Essay
Based on your notes, you will write an essay in paragraph form.
- Introduction paragraph: Describe the setting. Where are you? Describe it. What day is it? What time is it? What are you there to do?
- Body (this ?an be several paragraphs): Describe the people you are observing and the different nonverbal signs you noticed. Define the gesture and cite our textbook in A?A format. Do not cite any outside sources besides the course textbook. Here are some of the nonverbal signs you may observe:
- Emblems: gestures that have a direct verbal translation and ?an stand alone such as the "ok" sign.
- Illustrators: gestures that complement our words such as pointing when giving directions.
- Regulators: gestures that may prolong or terminate the conversation such as looking at your watch, walking away, or nodding and leaning forward.
- Adaptors: gestures that make you feel more comfortable in a communication situation such as twirling your hair or ta??ing your fingers.
- Affect Displays: facial expressions motivated by emotion such as a smile or frown.
