Varuna holds an important position in Hinduism and was worshipped as the god of ocean, waters, sky, law and underworld. He was the keeper of the souls and underworld. Varuna was also worshipped as the friend of man but he kept law and order strictly. If anyone commits, transgressions, Varuna punished the person severely. Aryans also respected Varuna due to his power over rain. In ancient times, rain was essential for farming. In short, there was widespread fear and awe among the Aryans about Varuna because he controlled Riti or the cosmic order.

The reverence for Varuna was so great that the diety was worshipped with hymns. The sage only knows whether Varuna was angry with a person or not. The devotee then prays to Varuna intensely to forgive his/her wrong doings fearing punishments and judgments. In the light of the character of the Varuna, we can conclude that Aryans led a life pleasing to Varuna to save themselves from punishments in this life and after death.
