Value for compressive strength of an al-boron composite


Solve the following problem:

Compute approximate values of E1, E2, G12, ν12 for the composite of Problem 1. Compare the results obtained using the mechanics of materials approach with the results obtained using more accurate formulas which are programmed in the accompanying software. Comment the results.

Problem 1:  Give an approximate value for the compressive strength of an Al-Boron composite with Vf = 0.4. Aluminum 2024 has E = 71GPa, Poisson = 0.334, G = 26.6 GP a, yield strength = 76 MP a, fatigue limit = 90 MP a, elongation = 22%. Boron fibers have E = 400 GP a, ultimate strength = 3.4 GP a, Poisson = 0.25.

Note that Boron fibers tend to be perfectly straight and that aluminum has a linear shear stress-strain plot before it yields.
