Humanistic and existential theories are based on the meaning of life, human potential and objective reality (Jean-Paul Sartre, 2007). The two theories are based on researches of several psychologist who did researchers on both human and animal behaviors. An example of theories that Humanistic relies on is Abraham Maslow's Hierarchy of human motivation and Carl Roger's person-centered theory (McLeod, 2016). On the other hand, the existential theory has had a lot of contribution from various psychologists. The most notable are its origin, the work of Soren Kierkegaard and Friedrich Nietzsche. Others like Jean-Paul Sartre had their input also to existential theory. His theory was based on emotions, person insertion into the social world and imaginations (Jean-Paul Sartre, 2007). Human and Existential theories promote an individual self-understanding. The two have a lot in common and sometimes they are referred to as one (Humanistic-existential theories). The humanistic theory concentrates on seeing humanity as either good or healthy. Hence a more positive view of humankind. Existential theory, on the other hand, puts more emphasis on obstacles that an individual face in the course of trying to have a self-fulfillment, therefore it is more concerned with the downside of humanity (Jean-Paul Sartre, 2007).

Humanistic and existential theories of personality have both accomplished great milestones in trying to explain factors that lead to a persons self-actualization. Even though they use a different approach, they still have a lot of theoretical backgrounds. However, Existential has had more of an effect on the study of personality as compared to the humanistic approach; the number of researchers concentrating on existential proves its impact. Its negative approach to living and self-actualization makes it more appealing to researchers.
