Use of genital herpes in pregnancy
Although acyclovir is not approved for treatment of pregnant women, its use during pregnancy has not been associated with an increased risk of congenital abnormalities, and many clinicians prescribe the drug for treatment of first episodes of genital herpes during pregnancy. Suppression of recurrent genital herpes in pregnant women near term reduces the need for cesarean sections to avoid neonatal herpes infections.
