Understanding watershed in a community

Assignment Task

Roll the screen material to form a tube. The diameter of the tube must be smaller than the diameter of your container.

Check the height of the tube by placing and holding it on the bottom of your container. The tube should extend almost to the top.

Remove the tube and tape the seam so it keeps its tube shape.

Place the tube in the center of the container and hold it vertically as you add a layer of stones or gravel around the outside of the tube. Do not pour gravel into the tube. Pour in enough gravel to fill about one-fourth of the container.

Next, add a layer of soil on top of the gravel until about three-fourths of the container is filled with gravel and soil, and your well stands on its own.

Get two large cups of tap water. Add food coloring to one of the cups.

The clear water represents rainwater and the colored water represents contaminated water.

You will pour the clear water around the outside of the well (not in it). First, make a prediction.

What do you think will happen to the water you pour?  Now, pour clear water on the soil around the well.  Continue pouring until you see a change in the well. Record your observations. Next, pour your contaminated (colored) water on the soil around the well. Continue adding the colored water until you see a change in the well. Record your observations. What did you observe when you poured in the clear water? Explain whether it matched your prediction. What proof did you have that colored water seeped into the well? How could scientists use a similar approach to understand watershed in a community? Mary and Dave have a conversation in class. They conclude that nearly all water pollution takes place in surface water-water on the ground and on top of lakes and ponds. This is pollution they can see. Does your experiment support this claim? Explain your answer. Groundwater is a significant source of freshwater for many people. Do you think it's necessary to monitor water wells for possible contamination by factories and other industries? How often should testing take place? Explain your answer. Need Assignment Help?
