Assignment task:
Social Responsibility is a concept that includes an understanding of intercultural competence, knowledge of civic responsibility, and the ability to engage effectively in regional, national, and global communities.
This particular assignment will focus on civil rights efforts in the state of Texas. Both African Americans and Mexican Americans sought to further their civil rights in society. There are many similarities between their movements, but also some key differences. For this assignment, I want you to illustrate an understanding of the objectives of each movement, how they intersected, and where they differed. I also want you to think about how these social movements influenced behavior and thinking in the state while also recognizing the importance and effects of these movements on the larger Texas community.
There are several sources I want you to consider as you work on addressing these concepts. Pages 414-418 of the textbook Texas: Crossroads of North America is a great place to start in terms of framing these two movements. Additionally, consider these articles from the Handbook of Texas Civil Rights, League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), and Education for African Americans.
