She has a back injury for which she is receiving medical care. She is unable to work until her back is more healed. Her dad, Frank, is a stay at home dad. He helps Charlotte and her younger sister, Becki, get ready for school in the morning, assists with homework, and attends all the school functions. He is stressed as he feels he should be looking for a job since the family is starting to have financial problems. He was hopeful that Anne would be back to work by now.
Charlotte has been having difficulty focusing in her classes. She is frequently caught looking out the window and not listening to her teachers. More recently, she has reported feeling hungry. She has also been caught falling asleep in class. At the end of the day, Charlotte runs out of the classroom to meet her father.
