Under what circumstances one oppose the cloning of organism

Problem

As we have explored in this module, bioethicists, policy makers, scientists and the media have been quick to identify the key ethical issues involved in human reproductive cloning and, in some instances, argue for an international ban on such attempts. Cloning is a big step for humankind, a great scientific achievement, but it is also risky and difficult to monitor. The source for human eggs may pose unintended risks for donors. Furthermore, the creation of another life as "A means to an end" creates ethical issues surrounding the moral worth of the newly created individual. With regard to planet earth and non-human species, some researchers believe that the cloning and resurrection of extinct species could potentially revitalize contemporary ecosystems. Could such resurrection of extinct species redefine conservation's future or are we journeying into dangerous territory?

Part I: Cloning: (Roughly 500, words in length)

i. Under what circumstances might an individual support the cloning of an organism?

ii. Under what circumstances would one oppose the cloning of an organism?

iii. Is it Ethical for parents to create an "Savior sibling?"

iv. Do you support the cloning of a companion animal that has passed away? Why or why not? (Do you agree with the criticism the Singer/Actress Barbara Streisand received from PETA?)

v. Is it a good thing to resurrect extinct species? Why or why not? (Do you agree with what geneticist George Church or evolutionary biologist Beth Shapiro have to say about this?)

vi. Which ethical approach would you use in coming to your decisions (above)? (Utilitarian, Fairness and Justice, Common Good, Rights or Virtue)

Part II: Egg Donation (Roughly 250, words in length)

i. How is egg donation ethically problematic in terms of the doctor's duty to "do no harm" and the limitations of 'informed' consent?

ii. What are your thoughts on women being compensated for egg donation? (It is illegal in the UK)

iii. Would you donate eggs (or allow your friend or a family member to donate?)
