These illustrations range from the small scale ,usually associated with low technology through to the large scale often relying on higher technology for which the term project is sometimes reserved.

In this system the goods are produced according to definite customers' orders and all manufacturing set ups depend on the receipt of specific items. In a printing shop for example many different jobs go on at any one time the press will be set up to run one job. When that is completed the press will be set up to run the next job. Mean while the first job is routed to other areas where it is folded, kept in order stapled trimmed, packed and transported. Each work area in the job shop performs its own function as it arrives. One of the major problems in a job shop is to schedule the work and to sequence it to balance the costs of idle time against the cost of having jobs waiting.
