Tp5028 - topic - intermodal transportation operations

Topic - INTERMODAL TRANSPORTATION OPERATIONS

Project Description -

The mini-project is the part of the continuous assessment of TP5028. Each student should select a topic of his/her own interest, for example, from current research or practice, which is related to the module and analyze relevant problems involved demonstrating comprehensive knowledge and skills based on the module. Methods, strategies and techniques for analysis are not limited to the contents of the module and should be defined in a thorough problem analysis. The student should pay attention to the following aspects:

  • Clarity in contents and structure
  • Complexity / comprehensiveness
  • Utilization degree of available information
  • Appropriateness of engineering interpretation

The project report must contain

  • A title
  • An abstract
  • An introduction with problem definition and concise literature review if any
  • A thorough problem analysis and selection of analysis methods, strategies, and techniques if any
  • An appropriate and comprehensive interpretation of the results
  • A summary and conclusion section

Possible Topics -

1) First/last mile issue in the intermodal passenger transportation

2) Bus and train schedule coordination for public transport

3) Hub-and-spoke network analysis for the urban public transport

4) Eurasia land bridge analysis

5) Trans-Asia railway analysis

6) Analysis of Asia-Europe freight transportation modes

7) Practice/experience of intermodal freight operation in US/Europe/Asia

8) Comparison of practice of intermodal freight operation in different countries

9) Challenges of intermodal faced in the intermodal freight operations

10) Empty container issue in the intermodal freight transportation operations

11) Impacts on intermodal transport of fuel prices, economic development and security considerations

12) DHL/Fedex/UPS intermodal solution comparison

13) Dry port analysis (case study)

14) Cost analysis between different modes of transport (case study)

15) Case study: describing particularly successful projects that collected used developed or applied data and tools to model, analyze and support decisions about relationships among freight transportation, infrastructure, the economy and air quality.

16) Sustainable intermodal transport

17) Interoperability among rail systems of the various countries

18) Encouraging modal shifts from road to rail

19) Impact analysis of the Arctic shipping routes on shipping industry and ports in Asia

20) Feasibility and impact analysis of the Thai Canal on the Strait of Malacca. Thai Canal formerly known as Kra Canal or Kra Isthmus Canal, refers to a plan for a large canal that would cut through southern Thailand to enable improved transportation in the region, like the Panama Canal and Suez Canal.

21) Impact analysis of the high speed rail link between Singapore and Kuala Lumpur on the airline industry. On February 19, 2013, Singapore and Malaysia have officially agreed to build a high-speed rail link between Kuala Lumpur and Singapore by 2020 at a meeting between Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Malaysia's Prime Minister Najib Razak in Singapore. This was expected to trim travel time between the two cities to 90 minutes, compared with 5 hours by road, 7 hours by conventional rail services, or 4 hours by air (including travel to and from the airports, check-in, boarding and other airport procedures).

22) Impact analysis of the projected high-speed link to Singapore via Vietnam on the shipping industry

23) Intermodal freight routing problems

24) Impact analysis of Suez Canal expansion project

25) Impact analysis of Panama Canal expansion project

26) Analysis of new silk road

27) Analysis of new maritime silk road

28) Transportation role in the "one belt and one road" initiative.
