Today I learned about four of the sub fields in Anthropology which are sociocultural, biological, archeology and linguistic. The sub field that interested me the most was Linguistic Anthropology.
Linguistic Anthropology is the study of how language impacts social life and identity. Language to me is very important because it is how we communicate to express our feelings, talk to one another, and express our culture.
We can also learn new languages from different countries to further understand their cultures and practices. A research project I would love to study in this field would be language barriers and how two different cultures get past these barriers to communicate and learn about their cultures.
In order to do this experiment, I would need people from two different cultures (for example: Japan and America) who don't know each other's language as well. It would be very interesting to watch how they would communicate with one another, whether it being writing words out or drawing pictures.
I would gather qualitative data (descriptive data) based on what I observe from the two different cultures. The significance of the research would be how two completely different cultures came across their language barriers to communicate.
I feel that learning about other cultures and visiting them is really important to broaden our perspectives of life and see the world through different eyes. In conclusion, language is important to grow as a civilization and world, without language we wouldn't be where we are today.
