It must have a clear central thesis and a minimum of four (4) scholarly sources should be included in your list of Works Cited, and you should refer to each of these sources at relevant points in your essay.

Your essay will consist of a response to one of these topics, with reference to two texts studied in this course (as specified in the question), but you must not use The Time Machine as one of the chosen texts, given that it was the focus of the first assignment in this course.

TOPICS:

1. To what extent does a character with a dominant personality provide an obstacle to the development of marginal characters in a narrative? You might like to consider the effect of a dominant character on the story when the narrator is also a marginal character. Develop your response in relation to any two narrative texts covered in this course.

2. Using close readings of any two texts studied in this course, describe how representations of love and loss are used to heighten the intensity of literary texts for a reader.

3. With reference to one poem from the Romanticism week and Wuthering Heights, explain how poetry and prose used innovations in form to respond to changes in society in the late eighteenth century.

4. Examine how one detective story and any one other text studied in this course build upon or attempt to alleviate the anxieties their readers may hold in relation to the fear of the foreign or the unknown. You should ideally consider the readership within the context in which each text was first published.
