This will be an original scholarly paper on a specific topic that strongly interests you-one that you have studied extensively. By now, you should have taken several courses allowing you to explore a certain topic in criminology and criminal justice-hopefully a topic you enjoyed studying. There can be several examples, but topics may include crime types (violence, property, substance abuse, white collar, sex offending, etc.), types of offenders (delinquency, female offending, offenders of certain crime types, etc.), victims (by demographic category or by certain crimes), criminal justice issues (death penalty, prisons, courts, policing, racial/ethnic inequality, victims assistance and rights, treatment, etc.), and criminological theory (general or specific theories). Sometimes, the names of courses, or the major subjects in which they are subdivided, can offer you suggestions. With this assignment, you are expected to give a comprehensive overview of this "main area of inquiry" that you engaged in. It is important that you work with me in developing your topic. If you approach this assignment correctly, it will be an enjoyable project for you. Approach this assignment as if you are a professional scholar who has become knowledgeable on a topic.

Your paper may be an objective report or a well-supported argument, but do not editorialize in your paper-any opinions that are not properly supported by qualified sources will result in severe point loss. Also avoid personal narratives. Your paper must incorporate analyses of a minimum of 10 separate academic sources. The qualified sources must be from authentic academic books and journals only-no websites, newspapers, or magazines (popular or professional) for example. Have me approve your sources before using them.

Your topic must be clearly identified and all of the coverage in your paper must deal directly with the specific topic. Avoid piecing together subjects that are loosely related. For example, a section on policing and a section on corrections do not belong together just because they are both "criminal justice systems." A good example would be the topic of social learning theory composed of coverage of the specific learning theories-Bandura, Operant Conditioning, Differential Association, Akers & Burgess, etc. Your completed paper must be well organized, with each section flowing together logically and coherently (not disjointed). Thus, it is important that you provide descriptive transitions between your sections.
