This must be a current news story from a commonly available

Refining the News Much of what passes for news is formula reporting that does little to add to your knowledge. The best journalism informs you and increases your greater understanding of an event or situation. For this assignment you are to find one formula news story that does little to help your understanding and then improve it. Continue by doing the following:

1. Post the formula news story you have selected.

a. This must be a current news story from a commonly available source, such as the New York Times, the Oregonian, Buzzfeed, etc.

b. Choose one that is a simple news story with low levels of depth, analysis and explanation. These simple stories tend to be short, just basic information about a crime or event, leaving out context and wider explanation.

c. Post this full story first on the assignment page.

2. Do research to expand your knowledge about the story.

a. First identify some questions that you have about the original story. These range from general questions: Why is this happening now, How many times has this happened in the recent past, to background context, such as How does this compare to previous incidents, or how many people per year are affected by this issue, or is this something unique to only American society?

b. Second do research to answer your questions. The easiest route is to go to Reddit.com and start by reading through reader comments. Even Wikipedia is a useful source for overall information and context. Select those elements that are supported and add to understanding.

c. Choose at least 2 detailed/reliable sources for your additional information.

3. Post the news story with these additions that you feel make it better for understanding more about the story. This should relate to understanding individuals, social forces, causes or consequences in the story.

a. Post the original full story and then insert, with highlighting, the additions that you have made to it.

b. Make sure that these additions answer the questions that you asked in Point # 2 above.

c. Make sure that the additions are informative to the reader, and not just trivial information.

Following are 2 examples of submissions which did a good job of identifying and addressing missing information in a news story:

1. The Original News Story:

Four people were killed Saturday after a military Airbus jet crashed in Seville, Spain, on its first production flight, officials said.

The A400M aircraft had taken off around 12:45 p.m. local time, before crashing some 15 minutes later with six Spanish crew on board, Airbus said in a statement.

Four of the crew were killed in the accident, while two others were in a hospital in a serious condition, according to the aviation manufacturer.

"Our thoughts are with the families and friends of those affected by this tragic accident and we are providing all our care and support," Airbus said.

Pictures from the scene showed the plane's smoldering wreckage in an empty field.

Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy described the accident as "tragic," adding that the government was available to help the families of the dead.

Rajoy, who is facing reelection this year, announced that he and opposition leader Pedro Sanchez had agreed to suspend campaigning Saturday as a sign of respect.

In January, a Greek fighter jet crashed shortly after take off in Spain during a NATO training exercise. Eleven people were killed in the accident which took place at the Los Llanos airbase in Albacet.

2. I did research on A400M aircrafts. News articles often times put emphasis on the emotional impact a story has and not the informative value.

I thought perhaps A400M aircrafts have had technical issues before and could contribute an important factor in how the accident occurred. Here was the research I found: "Between 2009 and 2010, the A400M faced cancellation as a result of development program delays and cost overruns."

"the A400M was overweight by 12 tons and may not achieve a critical performance requirement"

An MoD spokeswoman said: "As a precaution the UK's A400M aircraft are temporarily paused."

Another important key word I found is that he flight was a test flight.

3. The Revised News Story:

The A400M aircraft had taken off around 12:45 p.m. local time, before crashing some 15 minutes later with six Spanish crew on board, Airbus said in a statement.

This is not the first occurrence of an A400M aircraft experiencing problems. The A400M aircraft faced issues of program delays and cost overruns before receiving a safety certification in 2013.

Four of the crew were killed in the accident, while two others were in a hospital in a serious condition, according to the aviation manufacturer.

"Our thoughts are with the families and friends of those affected by this tragic accident and we are providing all our care and support," Airbus said.

Rajoy, who is facing reelection this year, announced that he and opposition leader Pedro Sanchez had agreed to suspend campaigning Saturday as a sign of respect.

Due to the poor reliability of the A400M aircraft the Ministry Of Defense in the UK has banned the use of the aircraft until further notice.

In January, a Greek fighter jet crashed shortly after take off in Spain during a NATO training exercise. Eleven people were killed in the accident which took place at the Los Llanos airbase in Albacet. irrelevant

2. The Original News Story:

A pair of NYPD officers who chased down a teen and hit him in the face with a gun - even after he'd? stopped running and ?had ?raised his hands - have been indicted by a grand jury and will be arraigned Wednesday in Brooklyn Supreme Court, law-enforcement sources told ?The Post.

Police Officers David Afanador and Tyrane Isaac chased Kareem Tribble, 16, after they spotted him peering into the window of a parked van in Bedford?-Stuy?vesant? on Aug. 29, sources have said.

Tribble tossed the small canvas bag he was carrying and started running when he saw the cops, the sources said.

Surveillance video shows Tribble slowing to a stop and putting up his hands before one of the chasing cops punches him in the face.

After the teen lies down in front of a storefront gate, the other cop slams him in the face with a gun, according to the video and a law-enforcement sources.

The two cops will turn themselves in Wednesday morning and will later be arraigned before Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice Matthew D'Emic, law-enforcement sources said.

An attorney representing Tribble welcomed the charges against Afanador and Isaac.

"What they did was a criminal act and a horrible thing and what's happening to them right now is well deserved," said Tribble attorney Amy Rameau, adding that the teen's teeth were cracked during the assault.

"It was absolutely unwarranted. They had no reason to chase that poor child. They took a look at him and decided they were going to chase him and he got scared and ran."

Brooklyn District Attorney Ken Thompson is also probing two other taped incidents that appear to show NYPD cops acting improperly.

Meanwhile, a Staten Island grand jury is still reviewing evidence in Eric Garner's July 17 death, which the Medical Examiner's Office ruled a homicide caused by an NYPD cop's "chokehold" as he arrested him for illegally selling loose cigarettes.

A Brooklyn DA spokeswoman declined to comment on the indictment of the two cops.

"Watching the tape was hard. You're upset, you're angry," Tribble's dad, Thomas Stephens, a 42-year-old truck driver, said in an interview last month.

"The tape speaks for itself. I want to see [justice done]."

The NYPD did not respond to a request for comment. Neither Afanador or Isaac could be reached for comment.

Afanador will face charges of assault, criminal possession of a weapon, and official misconduct - with the weapons rap coming because he hit Tribble with a loaded gun, a law-enforcement source said.

Isaac will be charged with assault and official misconduct.

2) The research I did was on the criminal Kareem Tribble because when the media reports a story of cop violence and abuse the first thing they do is leave out information about what the criminal was doing in the events leading up to the violence. There is no excuse for cop violence and abuse but I do not think it is fair for the media to report that the criminal was absolutely innocent and did nothing to provoke the police.

Here was the research I found: "On Aug. 1, he was arrested for the alleged sale and possession of marijuana. The bust that appeared on video happened on Aug. 29, and two days later on Aug. 31, the teen was arrested for allegedly gambling on the street and criminal possession of a loaded gun. Police claimed the boy tossed the weapon as he ran away. Police also claimed Tribble tossed 17 small bags of marijuana before running from police during the Aug. 29 arrest, but the case was pleaded down to a violation."

Police Officers David Afanador and Tyrane Isaac chased Kareem Tribble, 16, after they spotted him SUSPICIOUSLY peering into the window of a parked van in Bedford?-Stuy?vesant? on Aug. 29, sources have said. Kareem Tribble has had history with the police. On August 1st, he was arrested for the alleged sale and possession of marijuana. The incident with NYPD officers happened on August 29th,

Tribble tossed the small canvas bag, filled with 17 bags of marijuana as well as a weapon he was carrying and started running when he saw the cops, the sources said. Just two days after this incident Tribble was arrested for gambling on the street and criminal possession of a loaded gun. However, this case was oddly pleaded down to a violation.

Surveillance video shows Tribble slowing to a stop and putting up his hands before one of the chasing cops punches him in the face.
