In Response to "A Major Gain for College Sports"
1. This is an example of a proposal argument. Jenkins sees that there are problems with NCAA sports on campus and proposes a means of correcting the problems. How controversial is her proposed solution? Who might agrees with her? Who do you think would disagree most strongly, and why?
2. Defining key terms in any argument is important. In this argument, a key term is academic. What is your understanding of the word? Look it up in a good disctionary to see how it is defined. Look over Jenkins's argument to see how she describes sports and athletes to convince readers that they belong in the category of academic study rather than "trivial entertainment."
In Response to "A Technological Cloud Hangs over Higher Education"
3. How would you put Williams's claim into a specific assertion, in your own words? Is he just talking about physics labs, or do you think he includes other labs and classrooms? If you do, point out passages that apply to other teaching situations.
