This chapter uses the iceberg as a metaphor for an organization. The behavior of a person is above the water, but the majority of the iceberg is under the water. It is this ice under the water that represents why the people act the way they do. When you are at work and have asked another employee for help, if they blow you off and refuse to help you saying they've got too much to do already how do you respond? Do you think about everything else they have on their plate at work or even at home, that they might also be overwhelmed? Do you wonder if they just had an unpleasant conference with their own manager? Or do you just wonder why they're being such a jerkface? Think about your own experiences at work or school. Tell us about a time where you needed help or had a meeting and the person you were working with was less than helpful. What was your reaction to their underwhelming support for what you needed? Did you consider that what was happening under their proverbial iceberg, could be influencing their own behavior?
