According to research, children in all cultures tend to develop language similarly. Language and literacy develiopment is a primary predictor of school success. Recent focus on academic skill testing has resulted in more inside out (sometimesreferred to as skill and drill) curriculum in early childhood classrooms. In contrast, many early childhood professionals focus on the outside-in (sometimes referred to as emergent literacy) process to literacy development. Think of how you learned to read. How were you taught? Do you consider yourself a good reader? Do you enjoy reading and writing? What implications for teaching literacy are there based on your experiences? How can educators use this information when choosing instructional strategies for early childhood classrooms?
