Contemplating Sharing Bram Cohen created BitTorrent which allows users to upload and download large amounts of data. Cohen demonstrated his program at the world hacker conference, as a free, open source project aimed at computer users who need a cheap way to swap software online. Soon many TV and movie fanatics began using the program to download copyrighted materials.
As a result of the hacker conference, more than 20 million people downloaded the BitTorrent program and began sharing movies and television shows across the Internet.
