There are many who believe that the director’s responsibility is to serve the purpose of the text, while others believe that the director is responsible only for presenting a compelling production. What do you think? Is this an either/or proposition , or is there a continuum of behavior. For Instance, if a director sets one of Shakespeare’s plays in NY, Harlem, is he or she an amateur director? Are they violating the intentions of the text?
