The USA Patriot Act makes it easier for the government to conduct terrorism investigations and identify potential terrorist threats. Some argue that the expanded authority given to the government by the Patriot Act infringes on civil liberties. However, private companies are not constrained by the U.S. Constitution the way that government is, and may be able to provide government with critical information that they would not otherwise have. At what point does cooperation between the government and the private sector affect the rules of evidence in a criminal case?
