Questions

Answers should be at least 100-175 words and reflect critical thought. Whenever possible, please try to relate the course content to real-world applications from your work experience. Be sure to cite all sources as well.

1. In your own words, describe scope of practice. What is its relationship to one's level of training?

2. Last week in your readings, you were asked to complete the Ethical Issues Pre-Test (p. 25). If you haven't already done so, please take a look and complete it. What was your reaction the questions and your results?

3. What is the difference between licensure and certification?

4. The Sweeney article discusses accreditation and certification. Which, if any, certifications do you plan to seek, and why?

5. Dena and Kimberly may I ask, did you have the necessary skills and on the job training needed to effectively and successfully do the job? Was the lack of the necessary type of degree the only thing that prevented the promotion, or change of position?

I ask because I think back to our first class, we learned that therapists, social workers and psychologist all pretty much do the same thing, but the different types of degrees can determine the pay rate, and level of prestige the counselor will receive. Do you think it is ethical for a psychologist to charge more than a MFT social worker just because they have a different type of degree?

6. Great post! I also agree with your differentiating of the two Licensure and Certification. I was researching what is needed or the requirements for practicing where I live in Texas, and this came up for asking "How do you get a counselor license?

Step 1: bachelor's degree. ...

Step 2: Pursue a Master's Degree. ...

Step 3: Obtain a License to Practice. ...

Step 4: Get Certified in Counseling.

I have to say we are working the step two, in this state we have to take the state test for the license, and then take another test to be certified in the different field, of course after obtaining the Master's degree. Before graduating this program we all have to take the comprehensive test.

The state exam is the same or similar I still need to research some more but it does require a lot after all the time in school and all the hours from interning. I did hear that the state exam is very overwhelming due to all of the steps in the test. Do you think certification would be your first choice or the license?

7. What is the AMHCA Standards of Practice?

8. Scope of practice refers to the areas of training and level of competence in your training as a counselor. The scope of practice would be how much training we have received and how comfortable we are in our competence in that training in order to practice that approach with clients.

According to this week's chapter and readings there may be highly trained PhD's that still lack confidence in their ability to be competent in certain areas of practice. This is why professional associations and consulting with colleagues would be beneficial because if a situation should arise where you lack the confidence you can reach out to a colleague who may be more skilled in the area of question. Your thoughts?
