The supreme court ruled in obergefell v hodges 14-556 576

The Supreme Court ruled in Obergefell v Hodges (14-556, 576 U.S.___, June 26, 2015) that the same-sex couples cannot be denied the right to marry in any state. While this settles the issue of benefit equality for all legally-married couples, companies are not required to provide benefits for unmarried partners in any state, except in a very few local jurisdictions. Is the issue of providing unmarried partner benefits an ethical issue or a business issue? What are some legitimate reasons for providing these benefits, or for not providing them?
