The printing company has an agreement with his supplier

The printing company has an agreement with his supplier that he is to return a shipment that is 10 percent or more defective. Should this morning's shipment be returned? Explain your assertion using the language of statistics and analytics

Chapter 9: Hypothesis Testing for a Population Mean

Purpose: In this lab, we will use Excel to test a hypothesis about a population mean. In particular, we will use a data set on body temperatures of healthy adults to test the claim that the typical (i.e. average) temperature with humans is 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit.

Open the excel worksheet "nortemp".

Column 1 has the body temperatures of the n=130 healthy adults. Column 2 is an indicator for males (1=male) and females (2=female). Column 3 gives the pulse rate.

Let μ0denote the average body temperature of a health adult. We want to test the hypothesis Ha: μ≤98.6 versus Ha: μ>98.6(Note - this is a one-tailed test).

Fill out this worksheet by doing the following parts:

1. To test the hypothesis at significance levelα = 0.05, determine the critical region bysketching the t-distribution to include the critical values and shading the Do Not reject Zone (please take a picture of the sketch and upload the file as a jpg, png, etc.)

2. Compute the sample mean by typing in an empty cell by highlighting A1 though A131, Then pathing Data→Data Analysis→Descriptive Statistics→OK→Input Range wafer icon→Highlight A1 through A131→Click the Wafer Again.

The select Labels in First Row, Confidence Level for the Means, Summary Statistics, and Output Range. Then Click on the Wafer, then the highlighted cell, click the Wafer again, and click OK

x ¯=______

What is the sample standard deviation

s = ________

Compute the t-test statistic manually

t = (x ¯-μ)/(s/√n)=

Does the t-test statistic fall in the critical region (Do not reject H0) from #3? (Circle one) YES NO

Write a paragraph giving the conclusion to this hypothesis test in the context of the problem (be sure to use the language of statistics/analytics).

Compute the P-value for this test using the "tdist" function in excel. To use the tdist function, click on an empty cell and type in =T.DIST(-5.47,129,2).

p-value = ____________________________

Based on the p-value, does it seem plausible that the average body temperature is 98.6? Explain.

Upload both this word file and the excel file you used to Isidore for the appropriate credit toward the collaboration score for this learning module.
