The overall reaction for the halogenation of a hydrocarbon (RH) using Br as the halogen is RH + Br2 > RBr + HBr. The following mechanism has been proposed for this process

(1) Br2 > 2Br.

(2) Br. + RH > R. + HBr (Rate Determing Step)

(3) R. + Br2 > RBr + Br.

(4) Br. + R. > RBr
