The main causes of the outbreak of the Revolutions of 1848 were severe food shortages from poor harvest and recession there were also problems with unemployment. The Revolutions of 1848 were also called the Romantic Revolutions. ( John R. Gillis 1970) In France the middle class was excluded and the lower class wanted economic regulation. In Austria they had nationalistic tensions and the middle class wanted economic reform and political changes. The working class wanted better working conditions but didn't want social reform." Recent historical research tends to view the 1848 revolutions in Europe as caused by a surge of radical ideas and by long-term socioeconomic problems".  (Helge Berger,2001) There were a lot of short term economic problems in 1848. Having a serious shortfall on food from 1845-1847. There was economic misery and fear that triggered the European revolutions of 1848. The biggest known cause was Nationalism and this is because many different people wanted to establish their own independence.
