Assessment Item: Written Lesson Plan with Justification, Group Presentation and Peer Evaluation

Aim: The main aim of this assessment is for the student to demonstrate knowledge and ability to develop, deliver and evaluate education such as that provided in health care institutions. A secondary aim is the demonstration of an ability to work collaboratively within a team.

Task Overview-

This course has a specific focus on the role of the RN, in terms of effective and safe practice as team leaders, ward/unit managers, change agents and educators.

For this assessment item, groups will be of 3 students from within your tutorial class.

Task Details and Criteria-

Part 1: Group Lesson plan (Section 1) and Individual Justification (Section 2)

Section 1: The Group Lesson Plan provides the opportunity for students to demonstrate their understanding of lesson plans and their skills in developing lesson plans appropriate to context.

Section 2: The written justification is a short academic essay that provides the opportunity for individual students to demonstrate their understanding of lesson plans and their use.

Section 1: Lesson plan for group presentation (150 words)

- Using the Lesson Plan Proforma provided, and scholarly literature, work in your group to develop a Lesson Planon the allocated topic for the identified audience. You plan should include:

  • context of the education
  • aim of the lesson and related learning outcomes to be achieved
  • content to be covered
  • resources to be used
  • assessment to be undertaken

- Specific details on what to discuss in each of these areas is explained on the Explanation of Lesson Proforma sheet.

- Please research Bloom's Taxonomy for the development of appropriate Learning Outcomes

Section 2: Individual Student Justification of Group Lesson Plan (500 words)

- Each individual student is to write a short academic essay justification for the plan that the group has developed.  You should address the following

  • succinctly explain each of the sections of the Group Lesson Plan
  • provide a rationale for the content of each of the sections developed

-Support your work throughout with a minimum ofseven scholarly sources (references) to substantiate the written justification

-Identify in percentages your contribution to:

  • Development of Group Lesson Plan
  • Development of Presentation

Presentation:

It is expected that an assignment cover sheet and title page is attached to each submitted item. Please refer to School of Nursing & Midwifery Writing and Referencing Guide (https://sites.google.com/a/griffith.edu.au/nursing-writing-and-referencing-guide/home) on the course site for information and exemplars of writing, formatting, presenting and referencing your work.

Part 2: Group Presentation

The group presentation provides the student with the opportunity to demonstrate their skills and abilities in educating and engaging learners.

- You, with your group, are required to present the lesson, planned in Part 1, to your tutorial class

- For your presentation:

  • Students are encouraged to be creative in the presentation and consider presentations 'outside of the box.' For example, the education may involve a variety of media such as a radio program; short YouTube clip; role play; learner/audience participation.
  • If using PowerPoint, no more than 7 slides including title slide and slide for references
  • You may consider providing written material to your audience to support the lesson.

- Each student is to speak for 3 ½ -5 minutes - total time maximum of 15 minutes

- An additional 5 minutes is then allocated for questions

Part 3: Individual student evaluation of group presentations

This activity provides students with the opportunity to demonstrate their ability to objectively and constructively critique peer education presentations.

Task:

- You are required to write an evaluation of each group presentation in your class (minimum of five (5)

- These evaluations are required to be objective and constructive

- Use the Peer Evaluation of Presentation form to document your evaluation (one form for each group presentation you observe)

Presentation Topics

Topic 1 - You are a group of registered nurses working in a community mental health clinic which has just had the operational funds cut by 25%. Your group is to present education to your colleagues using information on Australian health system funding and the basic economics of health care to explain the current situation and the impact on your community health clinic services. This will include suggestions on how the service can continue to operate.

Topic 2 - You are a group of registered nurses working on a paediatric ward with long term clients who are being treated with leukaemia. Mark (8 years) and Matais (10 years) have been friends for a long time but last night when playing the new X-Box the pair erupted in fist fighting and verbal abuse. They now remain not talking. Your group is to provide education on conflict resolution to Mark and Matias providing them with the skills to resolve their conflict.

Topic 3 - You are a group of registered nurses who job share the role of patient advocate. You are to present to a group of prospective patients, who are contemplating elective surgery in a public Queensland hospital, on the topic of patient complaints. Using your knowledge of health ethics, law and organisational structures educate the patient about the processes involved in making a complaint and step them through the hospital organisation structures as a complaint escalates through to the state structures. Identify the expected outcomes at each step.

Topic 4 - You are a group of graduate registered nurses working in a unit where the nursing team is dysfunctional and all the senior nurses have just resigned. The Nursing Unit Manager has asked that your group develop and present education on teamwork at the unit's weekly seminar with the aim to develop some cohesion within the nursing staff ie set the groundwork for team development.
