The Industrial Age gave rise to great disparities in wealth and living conditions as more and more people moved from being entrepreneurial farmers to wage-earning factory workers. Labor unions got their start in response to the difficulties and poor working conditions. In America today, the spread between haves and have-nots is again on the rise with the decline of the middle class and loss of high-paying manufacturing jobs.
