The Impact and Post-impact Behaviour of Composites

Many early studies involved doing Charpy tests on small notched samples. This is a destructive test of impact resistance, consisting of placing the specimen in a horizontal position between two supports, then applying blows of known and increasing energy until the specimen breaks. The test is not really applicable to composites because of their complex and
variable failure modes.
