The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) was enacted in 1996 to provide federal protections for identifiable information. It is the first act that gives federal protection for the privacy of personal health information. It gives the consumer rights over their own health information, for example, you can view, check and know who has seen your health information. By law, health information can be used and shared for certain reasons that are not directly related to your care.
