Title: Nationalism: Divisive or Beneficial?

Overview: In 1862 Lord Acton wrote, "Nationalism neither aims at liberty nor prosperity, both of which it sacrifices to the imperative necessity of making a nation the mold and measure of the state. Nationalism thus does not liberate the mind and spirit -- it imprisons them."

Taking into consideration nationalist movements in the 19th century, you will write two essays. In the first essay, you will attempt to persuade your reader that nationalism is a negative force in society and for the people living within that society. In the second essay, you will attempt to persuade your reader just as strongly that nationalism is beneficial to a society and its people. You need to point to specific historical examples and events to support each of your essays.

Requirements: Each essay must be between 750 and 1000 words long.
