Final Project

The final project can be any form of newer media. This generally means it can be almost anything except a traditional linear narrative drama or documentary. But traditional videos can be included as part of the project as in the case of a video that is embedded in a mobile app or AR or VR. The project can be based on any of the topics covered in class or others that are appropriate.

Broadly the final project should take some new medium of choice and use it at a professional level to develop a story. The first impression should be one of professional quality, not student or amateurish. As such it is better to take a smaller project and do it really well and finish it. Final projects should be complete, not a work in progress, concept or prototype as much as possible. The exception would larger project where a prototype involves extensive development.

The project should tell a story, meet some stated communication goal or solve a communication challenge incorporating new media tools. It should include new media as much as possible and as little text or old media as possible. Where necessary it should include the proper technical work such as compressing, encoding and streaming of media content for the Internet.

As a general rule the final project should take 8-12 hours of focused work, similar to the work of a final paper.

Possible final project examples are;

  • Website
  • Created with html or CMS such as Wordpress, Wix.com etc.
  • Facebook Page
  • Should include at least two tabs beyond the default tabs provided by Facebook and integrate additional tools developed for Facebook.
  • Press Kit
  • Movie Poster
  • Graphics including animated graphics.
  • Cinemagraphs
  • html Email
  • Mobile Application CMS
  • 8Created with any CMS mobile app development.
  • Mobile Application Xcode
  • Created with Xcode or an Xcode sample project.
  • Mobile or desktop game using Unity or some other engine.
  • Virtual Reality including Google Cardboard
  • Augmented Reality
  • 3D Printing
  • Cloud Video Production
  • (Use WeVideo or other video project that is entirely in the cloud.)
  • Interactive storybook
  • Mobile Application Xcode
  • Created with Xcode or an Xcode sample project.
  • Almost anything you can get to go viral in a major way.

Final projects can be individual or group projects but the scope must be commensurate with the students involved. For example, two persons should turn in a project twice as sophisticated as those turned in by only one student.

Final Project Presentation

For the final exam create a 5-7 minute presentation of your new media final project. Present during the final exam slot. Make this presentation informative for your peers. Use slides. Bring examples. Give us the behind-the-scenes of what it took to create your project, etc.

One of the topics covered in class was media visionaries. If possible, as part of your presentation indicate in what ways your project is visionary, breaks new ground, includes new or mashed up components of old media etc.

Final Project Report

On Canvas turn in a summary of your final project. The most important part is a page summary of the project. This must justify why this is a good final project. Include what you did where and when. Include a summary or brief diary. Summarize hours worked, things learned and what are your goals or next steps. Most of your final project grade will be based on this rationale, not necessarily the project you present.

In addition, the report should include links to slides, links to websites or other online projects, files on Google Drive, photos of 3D prints, etc. so that the project can be reviewed.
