The federal government has significant influence over our day to day to life. Largely in part because the federal government oversees our homeland and national security and the health and overall well-being of the realm. Healthcare, specifically programs like Medicare and Medicaid account for a major chunk of the budget.
According to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, "four health insurance programs - Medicare, Medicaid, the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP), and Affordable Care Act (ACA) marketplace subsidies - together accounted for 26 percent of the budget in 2016, or $1 trillion."
Federal funding extends to various research carried out by the National Health Institute and the Centers for Disease Control. Although the Constitution provides a clear distinction of federal and state powers, the federal government seems to reign supreme in all matters healthcare.
