Nurses need to work together to realize the goals of patient care needs, improved outcomes and patient safety" (The importance of teamwork in nursing, 2015). Working in an emergency room, it is imperative that you have good teamwork skills, especially when a trauma patient comes in.

You have to work independently, yet cohesively at the same time, which can sometimes present as a challenge.

I found a study that was done in southern Brazil about strategies used by nurses to promote teamwork in the ER. Guedes, Dias da Silva, Lima Pestana, Dos Santos, & Lorenzini, (2016) described finding four common categories in this study: managing conflict, building and maintaining friendly ties, articulation professional actions, and establishing relationships of cooperation.

The nurses in this study explained that articulating professional actions as a task of nurse management, where you communicate the actions of the team so that everything is done properly.

As far as managing conflicts is concerned, one nurse stated that the key is knowing how to identify and manage conflicts, because " there is no point thinking about quality patient care without thinking about the quality of the work of my employees" (Guedes, et al, 2016).

The researchers also found that nurses feel that having friendly ties can help to ensure efficient teamwork in the ER environment. They believe that being able to have open conversation about topics other outside the work environment can be beneficial. Lastly, they believe that having relationships of cooperation are important, because each person depends on another in an environment such as the emergency room (Guedes, et al, 2016).

I believe it is important for the patients to see appropriate teamwork in nursing environments, as evidenced by a study that found how patients viewed the interaction between team members in a healthcare setting, as a basis for how they felt about their patients as well (Henry, McCarthy, Nannicelli, Seivert, & Vozenilek, 2016).

The entire patient experience can be determined by the interactions of the healthcare staff, so I believe it is important to maintain a good team dynamic.
