Conduct an analysis of the DHS headquarters directorate and operating agencies.

Select 2 of these agencies or directorates.

Identify potential areas of cross jurisdiction or mission area overlap. In the analysis, present a summary of why or why not these overlaps are conflicting, contradictive, or nonsupportive of the DHS missions.

Compare and contrast information and analysis with classmates' postings.

1. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) was created in 2002 with the passing of the Homeland Security Act by Congress. This came about after the horrific terrorist attacks on September 11th, 2001. The DHS is an integration of 22 separate departments and agencies with the mission to safeguard the American people, our homeland, and values, with honor. The United States Coast Guard (USCG) and Transportation Security Administration (TSA) are among several departments and agencies comprised of DHS.

The United States Coast Guard is one of the branches of the United State military but the only one included in the DHS. This agency's mission is ensuring the Nation's maritime safety, security, and stewardship. There are 5 homeland security specific missions of the USCG: safeguard and secure cyberspace, prevent terrorism and enhance security, secure and manage borders, enforce and administer our immigration laws, and strengthen national preparedness and resilience.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) was created and with the mission to protect the Nation's transportation systems to ensure the freedom of movement of commerce and people. This includes thorough searches of anyone traveling to and from the United States by all forms of transportation.

By enhancing security measures and screenings, but also providing protection for pilots on aircrafts, reinforcing cockpit doors for protection, and the creation of response teams for rail and all mass transit systems, the TSA works diligently to uphold this mission.

Both agencies have federal jurisdiction, USCG protecting the United States' borders, and the TSA protecting all points of transportation inbound and outbound of the United States. There is a presence of cross jurisdiction in that the TSA covers all forms of transposition which includes maritime transpiration.

These agencies missions overlap in the goal to protect the American people. I believe these agencies are aligned with the mission of the Department of Homeland security in that same way. I do not see where they would be in contradictory of the mission of the DHS in that they all strive to safeguard the Nation.

2. The Department of Homeland Security is made up of many departments. I work with them in my current role at Wells Fargo, reaching out to them making sure each and every social security card received was a real copy and not a fake. Also, making sure no laws were violated during our process of reviewing the social security cards.

Homeland Security has helped keep us safe for some years now and they play a very important role alongside the military. They keep our borders safe, which results into keeping our country safe from terrorism and other threats to our lives and country.

The two agencies I decided to discuss are Emergency Preparedness and Response (FEMA) and Homeland Security Investigation. FEMA is known for helping people during and after al disasters. Like all directorates of the Homeland Security that manages the responses and all the recovery strategies that help support DHS. Homeland Security Investigations is to help protect us against illegal trade, human trafficking, smuggling, immigration and document fraud.

The two agencies have both stated the discrepancies between the two are the undocumented information that could help them improve on disasters and apprehending criminals when needed. Each party knows that good documentation is the key to a successful part of Homeland Security. The two agencies would also need to keep track of all people responsible of not following the proper procedures to make sure each step is followed correctly.

"In HSI's first full year in existence, its criminal investigations increased in nearly every area to ICE's prior three-year average. Criminal arrests rose by almost 30 percent; indictments by nearly 18 percent; search warrants by almost 60 percent; seizures of illicit drugs by more than 40 percent; intellectual property rights seizures by 128 percent; and weapons and ammunition seizures by a staggering 762 percent. This standard of excellence has continued ever since, with HSI's dedicated workforce affecting global change and disrupting and dismantling criminal organizations." (ice.gov 2018)

"Located within the Department of Homeland Security, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is responsible for coordinating the federal government's response to natural and manmade disasters. FEMA is charged with providing both immediate and long-term assistance to local and state governments as well as individuals.

Throughout its almost 30-year history, FEMA has been synonymous with the word "disaster." Not only is this because of the agency's mission to assist in times of crisis, but also due to its long record of mistakes and, in some cases, failures that have exacerbated suffering caused by storms, fires or earthquakes." (ALLGOV, 2018)
