The companys vice president of research and development

Questions: 1. The Company's Vice President of Research and Development advises you that the Company will need to hire 220 new software engineers during the next six months due to the increased demand for enhancements to the FastShip software to support the Company's new computerized data bases required by the new government contract. He asked you to recruit as many Chinese software engineers because he believes "the Chinese are the world's most gifted software engineers." How do you respond to him with regard to recruiting for the 220 new software engineers?

2. The Company has never had an Affirmative Action plan. Should the Company adopt an Affirmative Action Plan? Explain the rationale for your decision.

3. As we discussed in class, Affirmative Action has been controversial. Cite some arguments for and against the concept of Affirmative Action and your personal opinion. With regard to your personal opinion, please note that there are valid arguments on both sides of this debate, so there is no one "right" answer.

4. The Vice President of Research and Development also advises you that whoever the Company ultimately hires, the new employees need to speak only English in the company's Tampa facility because facility's next-door warehouse complex contains thousands of tons of chemicals which are highly flammable and even potentially explosive, and he wants to make sure everyone on the floor can immediately respond to emergency directions in the event of a fire to avoid serious injuries or death. What are your factors you consider regarding this "English-only" policy, and what is your ultimate decision?

5. During your first week on the job, a respected employee in the Marketing Department, Abdul-Qadir, tells you he would like to apply for one of the Company's account manager positions responsible for interacting with the U.S. Department of Agriculture. He tells you that he's "a natural" since his name means "Servant of the Capable" back home in Saudi Arabia. However, he also tells you that the Company's Vice President for Sales, Bubba Smith, has told him that the last thing the U.S. government wants to do is to work with a "Muslim terrorist", who Bubba's defines as "anyone from the Middle East", and, on another occasion, called him a "Camel Jockey". Abdul is upset about being called these names but recognizes that despite these insults, he supposes that perhaps he should accept the fact that the government personnel he would deal with may, in fact, prefer not to deal with a Muslim. What do you do?
