The chemical literature article, "Wet-Chemistry-Assisted Nanotube-Substitution Reaction for High-Efficiency and Bulk-Quantity Synthesis of Born- and Nitrogen- Codoped Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes," discusses the implications of using a new innovative approach to synthesizing BxCyNz-SWNTs (boron- and nitrogen-cooped single walled carbon nanotubes) in bulk amounts. The chemical reaction that is essential to this substitutional doping is a new take on a previously performed reaction. Researchers in the past have used post-synthetic nanotube substitution in order to successfully synthesize multi-walled BN- and BxCyNz-NTs from multi-walled C-NTs. This was done by using pre-synthesized C-NTs as a precursor to undergo a carbothermal reaction with B2O3 vapor at an elevated temperature, all under a N2 or NH3 atmosphere. This caused the B and N heteroatoms to be incorporated into the tube-shell lattice of C-NTs, forming ternary BxCyNz-NTs or pure BN-NTs.
