The beam over a 3ft wide outside door is to be concrete to support the brickwork above the door. The moment has been calculated to be 4005in-Ibs and the beam is 4 inches wide and 6 inches overall height. The steel bar is to be placed 5 inches down from the top of the beam and consists of 1 No.3 bar. The concrete strength is 2500 psi. and n=8. If the rupture strength is 250 psi, will the beam exhibit flexural cracking when loaded? What are the compressive stress on the top of the beam, the tensile stress on the bottom and the stress in the steel bar?
