The author quotes David Crary (2008) that last year in the United States, the fifty states spent more than $49 billion on corrections. The rate of increase in prison costs was six times greater than for higher education spending. Another striking statistic provided in the first chapter is that one in 30 men between the ages of 20 and 34 are behind bars, which makes the United States the world's incarceration leader. For black males in the same age group the figure is one in nine. This week we are investigating corrections origins and history to recognize where we have been, to think in terms of where we are going in the corrections profession. We will be studying correctional concepts from evidence-based theory and best-practices to a reality of changing paradigms.

The author discusses the terms of punishment as well as the purpose of each. Your research, what does your investigation demonstrate that works the best for punishment? What are the forecasted issues and trends? Is there a danger to the community?
