The annual operating plan (MAP) was introduced as a tool to assist in the implementation of strategy by focusing on the specific actions that needed to occur each year in order to make adequate progress toward achieving each strategic goal (and therefore, adequate progress toward achieving the new vision) of the organization. In addition, by organizing these specific actions by department (instead of by strategic goal in the MAP), you then automatically have the individual unit (department) action plans (UAPs) that keep the organization as a whole focused on meeting the organization's (business unit's) goals. How might the MAP also be used as a monitoring and control tool (hint: updates or reports) to ensure that the actions are taken and that the actions are having their intended consequence on the strategic goals and overall vision?
